A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Mustard Oil Application in Reducing Knee Pain among Geriatric People at Villages of Kanpur, U.P
Abstract
The present study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of mustard oil application in reducing knee pain among geriatric people in selected villages of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. A quantitative evaluative research approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was used for the study. A total of 60 geriatric people were selected from Kukradev, Kanpur, by using a non-probability purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Numerical Pain Rating Scale to assess the level of knee pain before and after the intervention. The findings showed that the pre-test mean pain score was 103.55 with a standard deviation of 12.96. After the application of mustard oil, the post-test mean pain score decreased to 68.62, showing a noticeable reduction in knee pain. The calculated standard error was 2.85, and the obtained t-value was 12.26, indicating a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. Therefore, the study findings showed that mustard oil application was effective in reducing knee pain among geriatric people. Hence, the research hypothesis (H₁) was accepted, and the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected. The study suggests that mustard oil application may be used as a simple and complementary method to provide relief from knee pain among older adults.
